It is the hanging metal bit that you hit with a little hammer to make the noise when banging a gong.
Come to think of it, how do you say "gong" in Italian? I've just translated it as "campana". Is that correct?

sono delle campane e in italiano i bell plate si chiamano proprio campane, a lastra o in lastra di metallo, gong rimane *gong* anche in italiano.
