What a weird choice. I would love to work with other translators, but no interpreters thank you!
Working with other translators was a very good thing for me, we could brainstorm stuff together and bounce ideas off each other. I learned a lot like that. And the rest of the time, we worked very quietly together.

On my own Dec 24, 2022

These days, I prefer working on my own. I did work in-house with other translators for 20 years but each had its own office. I often miss the camaraderie, the lunchtime chats, the teamwork... and the helpdesk support! At this stage in my life, I definitely prefer working on my own and being left to my own devices.

Nah, kid. I work alone.
You'll just become a burden to me.

Adios, boy.

Depends... Dec 24, 2022

It depends on whether the other translators in the room have the same language combination as I have and if we can all access information about each other's clients. Otherwise sharing a room with other translators is no different than sharing a room with any other random strangers.

There are information security issues when you share your working space with others. People act very stealthy when they need to, and you won't even notice confidentional data being stolen from you and your client.

In a room on my own Dec 24, 2022

Because that's the way I usually work. However, I also have a PC in the spare room which my colleague/s can use whenever they are here. For example, last week my friend was working on a translation into Spanish and we would occasionally consult on translation options and some odd turns of phrase in the original text, which appeared to have been drafted in English by a committee of non-native speakers.

Sometimes hell is other people and sometimes it's not. "No man is an island..." (as they used to say in the old days before the male gender became anathema).

But let's not go there today.

Season's greetings to everyone out there.

Great poll Dec 24, 2022

This is the first time I come here to comment: great poll!

I had to think about it for minute. I love working in silence and without interruptions, but working with fellow translators would bring me so much experience (I've already been there) that I think it's worth it.

This one Dec 24, 2022

Only cats and espresso machine are allowed. Brief periods of my in-house projects bring to mind nothing but distraction, disruption, loss of concentration and poor productivity, including wasted commute time, a lot of it with Houston distances. Poor by my standards, in comparison with working alone in peace and serenity of my very modest home corner office with a million-dollar lake view.

... while we have your attention, Jared, it might be nice to recap the poll at the top of such threads, so that Tom understands what the question is about and even vote!
