Would really be interested in learning how to find clients in academia but especially in the field of linguistics. Should I contact professors at random from universities in countries where my source languages are spoken? Is there a different approach I should use? Thanks in advance!

I'd like to second Frank's question on finding clients in academia. Thank you!

My main field has been manufacturing in the Japanese<>English linguistic environment in the US. In recent years, the operations in manufacturing companies have been affected by the Digital Age in every way and it has affected the industry interpreters and translators very negatively. As my clients are gradually turning away from using the translators/interpreters for the conventional translation and interpreting services, I am in need of identifying new clients and new ways of providing my service. I hope I will get information that will help my situation.

My question is about finding regular Eng <>Ara clients that sends work regularly as I'm working as a freelance translator now. I worked with agencies as well as individual clients but so far found no regular workflow that I can organize my day around. I used ProZ, Translatorscafe and Upwork mainly to find clients, also use LinkedIn, Translator Directory and Freelancer occasionally. Thank you

I'm interested in finding more work on the topics of government/politics/international affairs, but also social sciences in general.

I'm starting a new career as translator and I wonder how to demonstrate my expertise in a subject without having already done extensive translations.

I have an educational background in music and extensive experience as a music teacher and musician and I would be interested in finding out if there is a music-related market that I could tap into for translation work. For example, should I approach universities and publishers as potential clients? What other types of people might be my ideal clients?

I am an experienced Finnish - English Translator and Proofreader/Reviewer specialising in Geology (B.Sc research and work experience) and the Earth Sciences, and in Science and Technology (general). I have been working mainly for agencies for several years, but now feel it is time to branch out and find direct clients. I am looking for pointers on how to get started.

Chinese to English (Native):: I need to reach out to clients that need subtitles and, for other translations, clients that sell luxury goods.

What to do if you are new in the field qualified but with little or no professional experience to show? You usually aren't given the chance to cooperate. Then how are you going to gain experience if you are rejected cause of this lack?! Volunteer and internships are the only way, right? Also interested in literature, but how does this publishing thing work? Do you get in contact with the writer yourself and then turn to a publishing house? What about the copyrights?

I would like to know how to find people who need the translation of personal documents and credentials. In this area you always have to be on the lookout for new clients, since once they have used your services (for immigration purposes, for example) they rarely come back.

Is looking up potential com companies and contacting them by sending them a brochure a good way of drawing their attention? Different conferences are certainly a very good way to make the first move and introdce yourself. But its also time consuming. How can you do it best, if you have your marketing material made for that purpose?

I am an EN>Chinese (Trad/Sim) translator with 6 years of experiences. Somehow I have developed my areas of expertise in art, performing art, lifestyle and travel (also a bit of design). But my real interest is really in new age/spirituality/mindfulness/etc., or I am really interested in translating books which promotes those kind of way of living. How do I get started in that area? I don't mind doing volunteer work at the beginning (of coz not as full-time volunteers lol).

I have been a Spanish professor for years and would like to know how to find clients specifically in academia.

I am both interested in finding new clients in the tourism industry, which I have broad experience with but can often still not find enough, and in finding a way of getting into literary translation (my only experience in this field is academic).

Hello. I'd like to aim at two fields I like and really master but have no translation experience in : permaculture/environment fiendly gardening books, magazines, websites and boardgames. I'm wondering where I should start and who to contact first.

Hi, I am specialized in mining and environment (I have attended several courses at the School of Geology and Mining) and I would like to increase my portfolio of direct customers in this area of specialization.

I'm very interested in narrowing my translation skills to subtitling movies, documentaries, short films, etc. What tools should I learnt to use and should I approach production companies? Producers? I'd like to know who subtitles major features that are so badly subtitled and improve that area :)

My personal efforts took me to a great start translating in the HIV field. Now, I need to secure more clients.

I'm also starting a career as translator. I have a master's degree in translation but in the past 10 years, I've been working in the luxury business (not as a translator). How can I show my skills, how can I meet the right people to work in that industry ?
