German term

Grundierung (hier)

German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Description of the content of a series of lecture (literature):
Es werden, mit Bezug auf den soziokulturellen Hintergrund und seiner transnationalen und transkulturellen GRUNDIERUNG für diese Epoche repräsentative AutorInnen... vorgestellt.

Does this mean the foundations laid by the socio-cultural background? I'm not sure if I have interpreted this correctly.

Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
@Ramey Good plan.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jul 26, 2017:
JEEEEZZZZ More like I need to get OUT for a while. I just drank an espresso, so that can't be the hitch. Muscle mush, derrière doldrums.
Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
@Ramey I always need more coffee ;)
Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
@Ramey If it were dative, it would be "Ihrem Schreiben" surely? Do we need more coffee? =:)
Ramey Rieger (X) Jul 26, 2017:
IN Bezug auf schon, but MIT Bezug auf takes dative, doesn't it? Look here:
mit Bezug auf Ihr Schreiben vom
Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
in Bezug auf takes the accusative. As in auf den Hintergrund just before.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jul 26, 2017:
@Helen could it be, that the 'seiner' is dative, referring to 'mit Bezug auf'? That's how I read it.
Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
Origins But Ramey's origin (though I'd make it plural) is a good solution.
Helen Shiner Jul 26, 2017:
@Lesley A strange shift from mit Bezug auf + acc to a genitive construction without helpful punctuation. But I read it as the foundations or basis OF the socio-cultural background, not laid by. The transnational and transcultural nature of the socio-cultural background/context perhaps?

while transcending national and cultural boundaries.

IMO, it's possible to declutter this sentence without significant loss of meaning. To get this translated properly, you have to focus on the whole sentence, not its isolated components.

"We will introduce authors who represent this era in sociological and cultural terms while transcending national and cultural boundaries."

Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : someone set up boundaries?

Yep. You guessed it.
neutral Helen Shiner : Nothing here about transcending or boundaries./I am perfectly aware of what they mean. This just doesn't work, Michael.

Just look up what transnational und transkulturell means/ Thanks, Helen, but I think this actually works beautifully

grounding

or possibly: basis

As has already been mentioned, "seiner" would have to refer to "Hintergrund."
