This is part of a really impressive CV of an Italian doctor, teacher, author and overall very high achiever.
The sentence reads "Il professor [XXX] si è laureato in Medicina nel 1996, specializzato in ginecologia e ostetricia nel 2001, e ha conseguito il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca in ... nel 2005."
So I gather he received his basic MD degree in 1996, then went on to specialize in OB/Gyn. I just don't know how to translate the verb "specializzato" here. Does this mean he started an OB/Gyn residency in 2001, or that he *finished* his residency in 2001? In English I think we'd say that he finished his OB/Gyn training or residency in 2001. Please confirm or correct that for me!
(I think we would say PhD for Dottore di Ricerca, in English ... any thoughts on that before I post it as a separate question?)

Otherwise it would be specialty training (UK) or residency (US).
I'd probably use "completed his residency" as American usage seems to prevail in international settings (but then it depends on what the CV's for)

"specializzato in ginecologia e ostetricia nel 2001" means that he met the requirements of the specialism in 2001 (he probably started training soon after becoming a General Practitioner", he was a awarded a PhD (that is what a Dottorato di Ricerca is).
I am not sure if the term "residency" is popular everywhere in the English-speaking world. I suspect that there are other terms used. I would leave it out since it is not in the original.
