Hello,
In the context of patent claim drafting, does يتكون من mean "comprise" or "consist of"? I have seen it used sometimes to list all of the components that make up an invention ("consist of") and other times to list only some of the components ("comprise"). I understand that the legal implications of getting these the wrong way around can be serious.
Are there clear-cut, standardised Arabic terms for these two English terms (e.g. maybe يحتوي / يتضمن for "comprise")?

If I were you I would translate (يتكون من) to (consist of), unless it is evidently clear from the context that the patent claim also includes additional, unnamed elements. The accurate Arabic equivalents of (comprise) are (يشتمل على), (يتضمن), (يحتوي على), (يشمل) or (يتسع ل).

While in everyday language the word "comprise" may have both the meaning "include", "contain" or "comprehend" and "consist of", in drafting patent claims legal certainty normally requires it to be interpreted by the broader meaning "include", "contain" or "comprehend". On the other hand, if a claim for a chemical compound refers to it as "consisting of components A, B and C" by their proportions expressed in percentages, the presence of any additional component is excluded and therefore the percentages should add up to 100%

i think comprise is the suitable for patents.
