There's a difference between what he did and what your text says he did. I think in reality he half-admitted to making some slight error of judgement... I don't remember him getting down on his knees and actually apologising. You maybe need something along the lines of "fess up"...

I don´t know whether this fits in your context.

It is used of someone admitting an error, not necesarily guilt, more a mistake, but the person is forced to admit it.

Ifølge Gyldendals Røde hedder "bodsgang" i sig selv <procession of supplication>.
Det at "gå bodsgang" er imidlertid simpelthen oversat som <apologize>.
