The context is
A certain medication is only available at pharmacies and

At first I thought this meant non-prescription drugs, but now I'm not too sure.

self-service shelves, in the self-service section

I think it probably does mean non-prescription drugs, but it might be a brand only available at pharmacies.

These are usually cosmetics and baby products and suchlike rather than actual medications, but might include cough drops and remedies of that kind.

Plasters and first-aid dressings, or perhaps treatments for mild skin conditions would also be found on these shelves.

The link here mentions 'naturlægemidler', so there might be some forms of non-prescription drugs too.

agree Don Spade (X) : I have to agree. You may find this link useful too - it has a definition of what "selvvalg" means in Danish pharmacies. http://www.lifdk.dk/sw19783.asp

Thanks - and an interesting link. Danish pharmacies are very service oriented, which is good on the whole, but can result in unnecessarily long queues to buy repeat doses of non-prescription drugs and minor items.
