By using words such as embracing which got out of hand, it choosing words which make violence into a mutual action ("we laid into each other") it becomes less of a problem when it is something both parties are responsible for.

Con un pò di creatività, ma neanche troppa perchè "lay" non richiama alla mente la "violenza", quanto l'atto sessuale.

secondo me rende meglio l'idea.
