"Comme il apparaîtra plus loin, toutes les difficultés rencontrées par les anthropologues trouvent leur domaine d’expression privilégié dans les débats sur la nature et les fonctions des paléomonnaies."
It's in the context of a book on Marx, for a chapter entitled: "La guerre, le commerce et la valeur dans les échanges primitifs"
Paleolithic money? Proto-money? (I think it is probably the latter, but would like confirmation of this...)
I found this definition in French: http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=3730644

proto-money
The second reference, a book "Fetishism and curiosity" by Laura Mulvey discusses proto-money in the context of Karl Marx and William Petty. So I think this works well for your context. Paleolithic money does not seem to be used at all.
Example sentence:
The use of proto-money may date back to at least 100,000 B.C. Trading in red ochre is attested inSwaziland, from about that date, and ochre seems to have functioned as a proto-money in Aboriginal Australia
although there were examples of a proto money in Africa at the time

paleocoins/proto-coins
Paleocoins actually exists in English, but I would personally use "proto-coins", depending on the context
