agree Tony M : Though probably not 'increased'; I think here 'apprécier' has the sense of 'evaluated' or 'assessed'; in other words, for a donation already made the figures are known, and for a bequest, they can be estimated in advance.

according to the life-expectancy of the donator

whereas the horizon of inheritance is controllable in the case of a donation which occurs during the lifetime of the donator, the horizon of inheritance can be appreciated according to the life-expectancy of the donator in the case where the inheritance occurs after the death of the donator
