"Ce travail de recherche s’inscrit dans une interprétation propre à la __sociologie compréhensive__. Il s’agit à la fois d’appréhender les référents essentiels d’une communauté tels qu’ils été définis à l’origine, dans la littérature philosophique qui s’y rapporte, mais aussi de traduire cette interprétation dans une lecture académique et managériale contemporaine... (Dr. Patrick Ochs)"
Is this a field of sociology. If so, what is it called in English?

"Sociologie compréhensive" is the French translation of Max Weber's term "verstehen", known in English as "interpretative sociology". It is also sometimes referred to as "sociology of understanding" or "meaningful sociology".

"Verstehen
A German term usually translated as 'understanding'. Employed by Weber to define his approach to the study of social life, namely the interpretive understanding of human agents and the meaning they themselves attach to their actions. Well! Where is the problem?

world verstehen
The concept is mostly used in this word pair (world in English and verstehen in German) to deignate a concept in sociology referring to 'world view' i.e. the way you define you surrounding, your society and the rest of the world, based on your initial set of norms or (world understanding). The most predominant term in English (even though I am sure all of these translations are valid) is understanding (used as outlook), meaning your departure point, i.e. where are you coming from; an important concept in sociology, since it obviously affects the outcome of any anlysis.
Hope this does not complicate the issue further.

: I've never seen this word pair, but I agree that it is a translation of Max Weber's "verstehen". However, I think, as it has been translated into French in Michael's text, it should be translated into English here.

: "Comprehensive sociology" is the English translation of the French translation of Max Weber's "verstehen"... It is not found in English Dictionaries of Sociology. It is translated in this way in bilingual Canadian sites, due to the influence of French.
