The above attempt is a bit lame I know. I mainly wanted to make the point that this is very tricky since simply saying association in English will be meaningless for readers. We do not talk about this type of organisation in the UK at any rate. I do not know of any law we have that is equivalent to the French loi 1901.
What is important to put across about this type of organisation is that they are non-profit making, unlike the various types of companies.

I agree entirely with Colin's analysis about the risk of the word "association" in context for UK audiences. The idea is of course closely related to the non-profit aspect of any organisation. However, I fail to see where "club" may come into it. I would go for "non-profit making organisations", specifically clear as to the object of any such set up and avoiding any restrictive definition of "club" etc.
