Portuguese term

sob volta

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime cabos
e.g.

A tripulação do R/M “MARICÁ” atribui o acidente à falha do pessoal do N/M

taking turns of the cable/rope

It seems to me that they should have taken turns of the cable/rope around the "cabeço" and not tried to restrain it just with their feet.

cabeço = Coluna metálica onde enrolam cabos e espias. (That is, a samson post.)

Example sentence:

Snub: (Nautical Terms) to stop or check the motion of (a boat, horse, etc) by taking turns of a rope or cable around a post or other fixed object.

Each time you complete a round trip (on the pole) with the rope, you'll have a new "turn of rope".

agree Elizabeth Best : slack off [the line] = arriar sob volta; also can be "slack out" or "pay out" (see http://www.usmm.org/terms.html)
