Discussion

T o b i a s Jul 11, 2009:
Context Daniela, so far, there have been five different responses with more than one possible right answer. The correct answer (which I believe has been provided) much depends on who you are writing for, their point of view, and the tone you wish to set. Perhaps you could provide more information regarding the document you are translating and its intended audience.

developed

A minha sugestao:
The tourism industry is ripe for further development.

"NEW RHINO SANCTUARY WILL DEVELOP UGANDA’S TOURISM INDUSTRY."

"The results showed that cultural tourism in Pelotas, while it exists, holds potential for further development, dependent upon the willingness of the local authorities and local residents to invest in the town to stimulate its economy and allow Pelotas to shine once again within the State of Rio Grande do Sul and to produce for its people, and the region as a whole, a better, more dignified, quality of life."

neutral Luiza Modesto : None of the definitions of "explore" (in EN) meet the meaning of "explorar" in this context. Here explorar means to get tourism to generate more revenue, jobs, etc. :) Nearly all those examples are using "explore" in the sense of "investigate."

there's more to discover

Another option would be to say "there's more to discover about the tourism industry". I have seen this used quite a lot in tourist-related texts.

A few examples:

http://www.google.com.br/search?hl=pt-BR&q=there's more to d...

Best of luck! :)

Whatever your passion, there's more to discover in Ontario.

There's really more to be discovered in our country.

disagree jack_speak : I'm sorry to disagree, but you list a cite that says ""exploitation" may carry two distinct meanings"" but you only describe one of them. The most common meaning of "exploit" = To use something in an unjust or cruel manner. Wikipedia confirms this.

exploited

Acredito que se está falando disso: exploit, no sentido de "to make use of; turn to account; utilize productively", e também "advertising to stir up interest in; promote [to exploit a product]", como definido pelo Webster's, e não de "explore" que é "to travel in (a region previously unknown or little known) in order to learn about its natural features, inhabitants, etc.".

Peer comment(s):

disagree jack_speak : Ralph, "exploit" usually means to hurt someone for illicit gain./ I don't care what the dictionaries say- I care what the word means in accepted usage. "explorar" is one of the hardest words in Portuguese to translate. "Develop" is usually the intent.

No, Jack, you should get rid of ideological prejudices. Read the dictionaries and add value to your vocabulary. Check my examples! The language is larger than your limitatinos. Visit http//dictionary.reference.com/browse/exploitation, first meaning.
disagree Marlene Curtis : Not in this context./Sorry to disappoint you but the word "Exploit" carries a very negative connotation meaning to "explore with an intent to take advantage"./http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/exploit[2]

Tsk, tsk, tsk....// But isn't this the exact meaning intended here? People want to take advatage from tourism, don't they?
