Portuguese term

compasso

Portuguese to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
Ao contrário do que é habitual nesta região marcada por encostas de grande declive, a xxxx é quase toda plana. As pequenas variações de cota contribuem para um suave ondular que ganha maior expressão com os bardos guiados de cordão duplo e 2m por 1m de compasso

[vine] spacing

Even though MLeiria's answer rings true, I felt that something more "folksy" should be in use, like, spacing.

The same site as mentioned by MLeiria confirms my guess upon a little diggiing into. A considerable amount of reliably-looking confirmation by googling with "vine spacing".

agree Rachel Fell : wouldn't call it "folksy", though :)

Thanks to both. "Folksy" is in quotes, but is not a quotation ;) :.)

Spacing
I think in English you may have to make it a verb and say what the 2m and the 1m spacing measurements refer to, i.e. the space between rows and the space between vines

For maximum vine growth and vigor, vines should be spaced 8 feet apart, and rows should be placed 12 feet apart. Vines planted closer than this are too shaded and may have to compete for water and nutrients, thereby reducing grape production and quality. Proper spacing also allows for good air movement which is essential for the reduction of potential black rot problems.
