Spanish term

topes de amortiguador

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Motor Racing
From a technical race report:

En el análisis posterior a la carrera se detectaron topes de amortiguador izquierdo tanto delantero como trasero.

Pensaremos en un bump rubber para el año que viene pero nadie se dio cuenta durante el fin de semana ni en datos ni físicamente (algunos amortiguadores aparecieron muy marcados, especialmente los traseros).

Discussion

Daniel Coria Aug 19, 2008:
Plus, those "bump rubbers" they are considering for next year are generally installed to prevent topping outs. I'm no expert, but I don't think you can install those rubbers anywhere on the bottom to prevent bottoming outs. Saludos/Regards!
Daniel Coria Aug 19, 2008:
Hi Wil. If we are talking about traditional racing tracks, which are flat surfaces, I think that "topping out" may be more common than "bottoming out", which might become a rarity.

If we were talking about the buffers/stops, which are elements that must be installed on the shock absorbers, it would make no sense for them to have "detected/spotted" them in a post-race analysis (they must have known whether such buffers/stops were installed or not). What they detected were the bumps that the shock absorbers left due to those bump rubbers not being installed in the first place.

Based on the last Note made by Eski, it might be referring to the "topping out" of the shock absorbers:

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Exactly- it has to be something that can be 'detected' both from data and visually. I think topping out is right. Do you think it could also cover bottoming out? Muchas gracias Daniel!"
