Spanish term

banda de rodamiento [not *tire tread* here]

Spanish to English Other Automotive / Cars & Trucks motor vehicle accident report / Mexico
la llanta derecha trasera se tronó por motivo a que se le desprendió la banda de rodamiento y que los restos de la banda de rodamiento desprendida fueron localizados a un costado del carril derecho de venida sobre la autopista….

It can't be "tire tread" (the term indicated in KOG entries and web images) because tire treads can't come off and be later found on the road.

"tire surface"?
"outer surface of tire"?

Thanks.

Constantinos Faridis (X) Nov 3, 2009:
me tto I said "tread" ....
slothm Nov 1, 2009:
Tread. Tires are recapped.
Old tires get a new cap. This cap is easily pealed off under high speed stress. These cap are frquently found on highways.
In Mexico, there is a big price difference between a new tire or a recapped tire. If you own a truck in Mexico, chances are that you will recap. $$$$$$.
bigedsenior Nov 1, 2009:
To clear up Robert's doubts, treads are the indentations in the tread cap layer. The layer is simply referred to as 'treads' and not by its technical name.
This is similar to rifling grooves giving the name rifle to the firearm.
Travelin Ann Nov 1, 2009:
Absolutely treads can come off - I have often seen them by the road, especially from larger truck tires. Older style re-treads OFTEN came off!
delveneto Oct 31, 2009:
Yes, they can come off and later be found on the road. Visit Brazil and drive through its roads and soon you will find one on the road. I believe they come out from tires that have been "remanufactured" (I don't know the exact English term, but I think you understand what I mean - the Portuguese word is "recauchutado").

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "My understanding has always been that the "tread" of he tire refers to the grooves within the tire that provide traction, and not to any part of the tire itself. Therefore, I prefer the translation "contact surface" in reference to debris of the tire scattered on the road. Thank you, Jose. And thanks also to everyone else who responded and commented."

agree coolbrowne : Correct. The tread may be detached and later found (If I may, I dodge leftover truck tire/tyre treads almost daily ;-))

Tires are recapped-
Old tires get a new cap.
Peer comment(s):

neutral coolbrowne : I wouldn't say that this is incorrect but it’s too technical for the context, a crucial element in a translation.

Recap = Used tire that is recovered adding a new cap with tread.
