This is in reply to Noni (the window below does not allow much space) and also for whoever might be interested: In Argentina (where I presume these terms originate) it is very common to see "lechuga morada". Now, I have never heard or read the word “purple” to refer to any such lettuces in the UK, where I shop at least twice a week. You do find “purple sprouting broccoli” but to refer to the type of lettuces called “moradas” in Spanish, the word is “red”.

Jorge Actually I had absolutely no idea what it is called in English. I simply remember eating it. I had never heard of red leaf lettuce before seeing this question.

agree philgoddard : If you do Google Images for "lechuga morada", you get everything from lettuces that are entirely purple to ones that have purple leaf tips. So this seems a safe choice, though I agree with the other two suggestions.

Good point Ceci, so I would either stick my neck out for purple oak-leaf or say purple-leaf. Purple lettuce sounds odd to me.
