español term

cabo de mar

español al inglés Ciencias sociales Historia Military rank, Spanish colonial administration
One Vicente Ferré was a **cabo de mar** living in Guánica, Puerto Rico in 1898, when the U.S. Army invaded the Island during the Spanish-Cuban-American War. His house was on the beach where the troops landed.

This man was a Spanish/Puerto Rican officer, not U.S. I have found "seaman" and "petty officer" but I'm not sure which, if either, is correct. Is there a "standard" English translation for this rank, at this time and in this setting? I'm still looking for English sites about the U.S. landing in Guánica, but perhaps a colleague with specialized knowledge can save me some time? Thank you!
