Spanish term

bien que cuando las llaves rehusan el abrir poco vale el aguardar al pie del por

Spanish to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Es una frase de una carta del 1862. El contexto: una anciana quiere morirse pero la muerte no le llega; el escritor opina que debería seguir con su vida en vez de esperar la muerte.
An English equivalent, anyone?

Andrew Bowden (asker) Jul 15, 2010:
Deborah, I like your "hang around outside the pearly gates". I fits the tone of the letter perfectly. Would you mind entering it as a proposed answer?
And yes, it should be AGUARDAR AL PIE DEL PORTAL. Thanks again.
Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 12, 2010:
hang around outside the pearly gates end of "por" (gate) must have been chopped for lack of space
philgoddard Jul 12, 2010:
What is the literal meaning of "aguardar el por"? Just interested.
Andrew Bowden (asker) Jul 12, 2010:
thanks for your suggestion i like it!
Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 12, 2010:
thanks for the information! here is an adapted suggestion:

"let the dear lady tarry awhile amongst us; heaven can wait!"
Andrew Bowden (asker) Jul 12, 2010:
the letter addresses a third party the letter is not to the old lady herself
Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 12, 2010:
spelling correction (sorry) awile > awhile
Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 12, 2010:
is the author addressing the elderly lady or the reader? If he is addressing the elderly lady you could expand Meirs' answer a little, here is an example:

"tarry awile amongst us dear lady, heaven can wait!!"

Heavens can wait

Closest in meaning that I could imagine (there was a movie with that name)
Peer comment(s):

agree Bubo Coroman (X) : it's a part of the language and ideal for this context -- can be expanded into a longer phrase. It's actually "heaven can wait".
