chistar

Spanish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
This is from a screenplay that takes place in Argentina in the 70s. It is the sound characters make to get one another's attention (can't think of anything more colloquial in English than "call out to"):

S señala una zona en el techo. Ambos quedan alertas, durante varios segundos, con el oído atento, mirándose de cucheta a cucheta.
bunks.

JOSE (41), el cocinero, pasa entre los camastros y al verlos en esa actitud, les chista.

It's like whistle, but more onomatopoeia

Thanks

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): AllegroTrans, Rachel Fell

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

hisses at them - also an onomatopoeically 'catty' word...
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : do you hiss at someone to get their attention?

Not if you are an Englishman in the Home Counties. Yes, if you are a jinetero or jinetera on Cuba.
neutral David Hollywood : not so sure about "hiss" as this would have a different connotation

my initial idea had been 'mouthed (at)' but the asker's onomatopaeic suggestion had sent me on a different tack.
neutral neilmac : I've seen the Spanish habit of going "psst" to attract attention described as hissing by English sources, but I don't think it's an apt translation, due to its negative connotations...
