I have two questions.
1) The first is simply: what is an "abuela", in English and in general?
2) The second is: is the second sentence possible wrong? Are the "abuelas" moved into their pens on the day of their birth, or is it possibly piglets in general (i.e. who are not necessarily destined to be "abuelas") that are moved into the pen on the day of their birth. Could this be some kind of territorial thing?
Being from the city I know absolutely nothing about animal husbandry.

The meaning is grandmothers.
In swine husbandry, whereas in English the mother sow is called the dam and the boar is called the sire, in Spanish they tend to call them "madres/padres", (y la madre de una madre es la abuela).
Young sows that haven't farrowed (had a litter) yet are called gilts.

Your best bet is to use "grandmothers" in brackets...
A sow is any female which has farrowed at least once.

I'm afraid you'd need to ask the client for the exact meaning there, or wait until I can consult an expert. For now I'd just say that in Spanish they use often use terms like madre/padre/abuelo/a for animals which would seem inapproriate in English... I'll get back to you later ;)

Basically, you have nailed what the original text states (Las abuelas entran recién nacidas con 1 dia de vida)... so I wouldn't worry too much about the finer details, especially if you have a deadline. My pig people are mostly away this month, but I'll try to find out more.

I understand why it's confusing. The most normal term to see in this context rather than "abuelas" would be "lechones". In fact, I found no convincing googlehits for "abuelas recien nacidas", and only 3 for "lechones recien nacidas"... so it may be a mistake.

They change pens for different types of pig at different times for different reasons, such as lowering the stocking density to prevent infections, etc etc, so it's hard to say.

Yes, you have to be careful because often it isn't clear when they are referring to insemination whether it's about AI or natural porking...

Yes, they do that all the time, saying "entran" (come in) when they mean "are selected"... it's a minefield of pig poo ;)

| We heard back from the client - the abuelas are called "grandmother stock". There are two types of insemination, natural and artificial. Sows destined for natural insemination are referred to as grandmother stock. And they are SELECTED twice a year at birth. Thanks for your help, I didn't know gilt, dam or sire - now I have dome revising to do. |
