La película posee una elevada resistencia del aislamiento, y por esta razón y por el hecho de que apenas absorbe agua, y no contiene sustancia plastificante que podría migrar de la película, puede emplearse sin soporte en los motores de pequeña potencia, y en los de hasta varias decenas de C.V. Para motores muy grandes, y para algunos más pequeños en los que las irregularidades de las ranuras podrían causar desperfectos en la película sin soporte, pueden preferirse laminados de galga 200, por ejemplo, y un papel calandrado de tipo prespan - 'Leatheroid' o 'Elephantide' - se soluciona el problema; las irregularidades de las ranuras se alojan en el papel, y el aislamiento del 'Melinex' queda protegido.
