nuts

What are Dried Fruits and Nuts?
**They are known as dried fruits due to their low percentage of water and can further be divided into two main groups based on their makeup. ** On the one hand there are the oily fruits, known as nuts in English culture, so called because of the high fat content in their chemical composition. With these fruits the edible part is the seed (Walnut, Hazlenut, Almond, Chestnut, Peanut, Pine Nut, Pistachios, etc), which are covered by a hard woody shell. The second group is made up of dried fruits, such as Raisins, Figs, Dates, Apricots, Plums. This group also contains a large quantity of concentrated nutrients but they have a much lower fat content. Notably, they are rich in glycides....

Medically and nutritionally speaking (here in the US), nuts are included in the broader group of dried fruits. See my added note.

: "Dried fruit" includes things like prunes, raisins, dried apricots - these are nuts. (In any case, would be "dry fruit" not "dried fruit"). The usual word for "nut", "nuez" also specifically means walnut, which is why they use a more inclusive term.

Gillian, lay terms and medical terms not always coincide. Medically, nuts are just a subcategory within "dried fruits" (not "dry fruit"), all of which are characterized by a low water content. Nuts are the dried fruits with the highest content of fat.

nuts and seeds
This is quite a controversial area - and the term 'frutos secos' is used in different ways by different people. However, I have always taken it to mean 'dried nuts AND seeds'. IMO it does NOT include dried fruit such as prunes, figs, raisins etc. However, some people would simply translate it as 'nuts'. That would depend whether you call sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds nuts or not - I'd call them seeds. Some might lump them under the term 'nuts'.

Nuts and Seeds
Introduction -- Nutrition and Storage -- Nuts -- Seeds
Introduction
Nuts are seeds that are covered with a hard shell. Most are the seeds of trees, but the seeds of a few other plants that are not strictly nuts will also be considered here as they can be conveniently classified with nuts for culinary purposes.
Nuts can be used in many ways. Whole, flaked and ground nuts and nut butters are widely available. A classic vegetarian savoury is nut roast and many vegetarian cook books give a recipe for one, which can be endlessly varied with different herbs and flavourings and different combinations of nuts and cereals. Nuts can be added to sweet dishes, cakes and biscuits, and nut butters can be added to soups and stews to thicken them.
Nutrition
Nuts in general are very nutritious, providing protein and many essential vitamins, such as A and E, minerals, such as phosphorous and potassium, and fibre. Nuts are also high in carbohydrate and oils, so shouldn't be eaten in excess.
Whereas pulses all belong to the legume group of plants, nuts come from a variety of different plant groups, so the nutritional content is more varied too. A brief description of individual varieties is given below, together with the main nutrients they contain.

Just wanted to expand my agree, and also say that I prefer the singular despite many hits in plural.
As far as I'm aware (and please correct me if I'm wrong), frutas secas (just fruit) is not that same as frutos secos (nuts, etc.)

More info. I still think that frutas secas and frutos secos are different. This ref talks about when to give children frutas secas and frutos secos, making a clear distinction.
