I think the previous comment is probably a good explanation. Here's a confirmation of the use from a paper company:

rollers are what you usually call those big spools of paper
measuring over 1 m; however, "pope" does not figure in any of my normal & technical dictionaries. Sure you haven't got a typo?

'Pope' roller....
Seems [to me] like a machinery manufacturer's brand; in large-scale and highly specialized machinery, the makers are reduced, and the users name the machineries after the brand names, because is widely known among the trade.
