base materialista

Spanish to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Research
How can I say this in a "sociological way please? I am not sure I should translate "base" as basis, foundation or core in this context and the "silent generation" does not refer to materialism....

This is the context:

Generación silenciada (1914-28).Socializada en la escasez, tiene comportamientos basados fundamentalmente en el ahorro y la reducción en el consumo, lo que indudablemente tienen efectos ambientales positivos, pero no están basados en convicciones ambientalistas.
Estamos por tanto ante una generación sin conciencia ambiental pero con comportamientos que indirectamente provocan efectos ambientales positivos.
A este perfil ambiental lo denominamos “de base materialista”.

Thank you for any help

@Muriel Vasconcellos I have no intention of offending you for your answer Muriel, I simply want everyone to understand that there were also other valid answers, I hope you understand my comment. Thank you again for your help.

I have chosen the answer given by Muriel Vasconcellos, but only because there were more agreements with her, I think there were also other valid answers and greatly appreciate all of your help, both Muriel and all others. THANK YOU all very much for your time and help. I greatly appreciate it. <3 <3

base materialista = motivación de tipo material Hi Eileen, this is how I understand the ST in case it helps (I write faster in Spanish): la generación silenciada no respeta el entorno por motivos ideológicos o intelectuales sino por falta de recursos económicos.

@Helena Chavarria "Base" doesn't sound too good to me I would maybe use "foundation" but I'm not sure if it would be acceptable.
Helena Chavarria Sep 12, 2017:
@Eileen As far as I can see, 'environmental profiles' is used when referring to products and things, not people.
Eileen Brophy (asker) Sep 12, 2017:
@Helena Chavarria Thank you very much Helena, I think I will wait a while and see which option others go for as I am a bit lost on this one. <3 <3

Sahlins argues that although there might be a materialist “base” for culture, such as natural constraints, the quality of culture is that is always adapts to these constraints with a specific cultural scheme that is never the only one possible, never determined exclusively by material forces.

materialistically motivated

While the outcome was positive for the environment, they key point, as I see it, is that the generation was *motivated* for materialistic reasons. Lots of examples from sociology texts:

materialistic-based / materialistic-centered

Considering that the context here draws upon contrasting views and effects between conviction and materialistic-based thinking, "base materialista" can also be translated as simply: materialistic-based or materialistic-centered.

pragmatic

Or "pragmatically motivated/based", although that may be too long-winded. Then again, in my experience Sociology terms rarely shun verbosity....

Pragmatic: Dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
"a pragmatic approach to environmentalism"
Example sentence:

What is the difference between pragmatic environmentalism and ideological environmentalism?
