At the heart of Islam, there is a story about a place that always was.
The story holds that long before the great Prophet Abraham, before Adam and Eve, even before creation, there was a holy place, the celestial house of God.
It is called the Kaaba…and its replica on earth remains today in the center of Mecca.
The Kaaba symbolizes the worship of the one God, the God of Abraham.
It has been a place of pilgrimage for countless generations, drawing people of many faiths, even, some scholars believe, Jews and early Christians.
But for nearly 1400 years, it has been the exclusive domain of Muslims who come, now, by the millions.
They circle the Kaaba and pray—one of the many rituals that are part of an epic, five-day quest for salvation.
The logistical challenge of moving, housing and caring for some two million people is matched only by the challenges of faith each pilgrim will face.
