Like other insectivorous bats, the lesser horseshoe relies on a highly sophisticated method of echolocation to find its prey. It often hunts close to the ground, uttering ultrasonic calls that reverberate back and reveal the presence of prey in the darkness of night. Besides the nose leaf, there are also two other structures, called the sella and lancet, which aid this process. From autumn until
spring, when food is scarce, these bats will hibernate in caves or similar localities.

These armadillos live alone, but create a large number of dens, excavating the soil with their powerful claws. In some cases, these dens can act as food traps, luring invertebrates inside. Dens intended for breeding have an enlarged chamber at the end, lined with vegetation, which helps
to keep the young warm. If they need to swim, these armadillos can swallow air. This helps
maintain their buoyancy and keep them afloat.

Green tiger beetles are most commonly seen in spring and summer. They are very agile, and will run both to pursue prey and escape danger – they are able to fly if necessary, although the thin, transparent hind wings are not normally evident. These are protected beneath the elytra, or hardened
forewings that are usually kept folded over the top of the beetle’s abdomen. They are called tiger beetles because of their aggressive feeding habits; they have sharp teeth in their strong mandibles.

Il pipistrello passa il periodo che va dall’autunno alla primavera, quando il cibo scarseggia, ibernato in grotte o luoghi analoghi.

È un animale solitario che con le sue unghia robuste scava nel terreno un gran numero di tane. In alcuni casi le tane fungono anche da trappole per piccoli invertebrati che ne vengono attirati, mentre quelle costruite per scopi riproduttivi hanno una camera più grande al fondo, tappezzata di vegetazione in modo da mantenere caldi i nascituri. Se si trova a dover nuotare, l’armadillo può inghiottire aria per mantenersi a galla.

La cicindela appare prevalentemente in primavera e in estate. È molto agile e in grado di correre rapidamente sia per catturare le prede, che per sfuggire al pericolo. Se è necessario può anche volare scoprendo le sottili ali posteriori che generalmente non sono visibili, perché protette dalle elitre, o ali anteriori sclerificate, che il coleottero tiene piegate sull’addome. La cicindela è un cacciatore aggressivo con denti aguzzi e mandibole forti.

Source text - Spanish Una fachada con doce balcones, cuatro horizontales por seis de arriba abajo. Sólo un par de ellos airean ropa tendida, algunos están claramente agrietados. No pocas barandillas presentan síntomas de herrumbre y mellas notorias: nada extraordinario a simple vista. A la hora del mediodía, cualquiera puede contar una, dos, tres mujeres barriendo cenizas. La escena suele ser idéntica en todos los casos; abren la puerta acristalada de la terraza, miran al suelo, cabecean con los brazos en jarras. Desaparecen un instante y regresan pertrachadas de escoba y recogedor, y ahí mismo empiezan a trasegar de un lado para otro, tosen ratos, se frotan los ojos y a menudo se las ve mover los labios, como si hablaran para sí mismas. Un rito popular que se repite regularmente, desde hace décadas, a cada nueva erupción de nuestro colosal e inexorable vecino de enfrente. Pues bien, tal es el punto de partida de Incenerimento, la monumental novela que sustrajo a Ennio di Giovanni (Comiso, 1946-Milán, 1978) nueve años de trabajo insomne.
Los primeros veinitrés capítulos del manuscrito original me fueron confíados hacia las postrimerías de 1977, ocho meses antes de que su autor decidiera acabarse la vida. Constaba de cuatrocientas cuarenta y seis páginas mecanografiadas, cosidas a mano y asaeteadas por un poderoso contingente de notas marginales, aniquilaciones, variaciones y tachaduras – así como más de una refutación de cualquiera de éstas, quemaduras y salpicaduras de café – que convertía su lectura en un endiablado ejercicio jeroglífico.

I primi ventitré capitoli del manoscritto originale mi furono affidati verso la fine del 1977, otto mesi prima che il suo autore decidesse di porre fine alla sua vita. Erano quattrocentoquarantasei pagine dattilografate, cucite a mano e tormentate da un poderoso contingente di note a margine, annullamenti, varianti e cancellature – ma anche confutazioni di più di una di queste cose – bruciature e macchie di caffè, che facevano sì che la lettura del manoscritto risultasse un indiavolato esercizio geroglifico.
