Source text - English Peter's big car purred along the streets, Jill and Alfonso enjoying the deep seats and the music. Peter picked up the 'phone and dialled a number. It's Peter Garland here. Got a table for three? Good. We'll be there in about ten minutes.
Ten minutes later they drew up in front of the restaurant. The doorman helped Jill out of the car and took the keys from Peter who asked for a tie for Alfonso. The woman who took their coats looked disapprovingly at Alfonso. What was Mr. Garland doing with a guest like that? And Jill. Who was this young lady then? The cheap woollen coat said everything.
It was a Russian restaurant. Rich mirrors and red velvet walls. The tables were little islands of light in the dark decor. Alfonso had never drunk vodka before. The bottle was placed in a bucket on the table. Their meal was punctured by vigorous serenades from a trio of Russian players. At about three in the morning they started throwing their glasses over their shoulders as they finished them. Peter assured Jill that they were included in the price. Peter told Jill he loved her. Alfonso agreed and said he did too. They both put an arm around her and kissed her on the cheek. She felt good and better than she had been for a long time. Peter leaned his head against the wall and closed his eyes. God this was fun. Far from that ghastly family feast. He couldn't stand one more. Would have to do something about it all. Alfonso was thinking of his wife, the little flat in the suburbs of Madrid and tears started running down his cheeks. He wiped his face with embarrassment. Peter was informed by the head waiter that it was four o'clock and that they were thinking of closing, if that was alright? They looked around and saw that they were the only clients left. The musicians were asleep in a corner.
It was cold outside. Very cold. They drove Alfonso back home. Peter stopped the car soon after dropping him off and took Jill in his arms. Shall we go back to your place, he asked? No. No she did not want him back there. Too soon after the other departure. So they went back to the office and made love under the conference table.
Peter left Jill at a nearby bus-stop. A little wave, a fluttered look. She stood there alone in the grey light, her long black skirt in the dawn, her white face drawn, her night written all over her.

It was eight o'clock in the evening a week later. Peter was working at his desk, his secretary in the neighbouring office. Alfonso came in to clear the ashtrays and empty the waste-paper basket. When he saw Peter he said he would come back later. Peter looked up and smiled vaguely and told him to go ahead. His 'phone rang.
Do you want to take it? His secretary asked.
Who is it?
Jill. She just said Jill.
Jill? Who is she? I've never heard of her, Peter said putting down the receiver.
Alfonso shot him a glance. He held the heavy crystal ashtray in his hand. His heart started beating faster and he looked at the man, then down at his hand. The bastard. The bloody bastard. He made a move toward the desk, feeling the weight of the ashtray. And then thought better of it. His family in Madrid. They needed him. They needed his money.

Peter și-a luat telefonul și a apelat un număr. Peter Garland la telefon. Aveți o masă disponibilă pentru trei persoane? În regulă. Ajungem în vreo zece minute.

Sticla era amplasată într-o gălețică de pe masă. Cina era acompaniată de către un trio voinic de muzicanți ruși. Cam pe la un trei dimineața au început să-și zvârle paharele peste cap după ce le terminau. Peter a asigurat-o pe Jill că erau incluse în nota de plată. Peter i-a confesat lui Jill că o iubește. Alfonso a aprobat și a spus că și el simte la fel. Ambii bărbați și-au aruncat brațele în jurul ei și au pupat-o pe obraz. Ea se simțea bine, ba chiar mai bine decât s-a fost simțit de o bucată de vreme încoace. Peter și-a sprijinit capul de perete și și-a închis ochii. Dumnezeule ce bine se simțea. Departe de cina aia disperantă în familie. Nu mai putea face față încă uneia. Să mai aibă de-a face cu una de-astea. Alfonso era cu gândul la soția lui, acea garsonieră mică din cartierele din Madrid, și lacrimi au început să i se prelingă pe obraz în jos. Și-a șters fața stânjenit. Peter a fost informat de chelnerul șef că se făcuse ora patru și aveau de gând să închidă, dacă nu îl deranja? Ei au privit în jurul lor numai să-și dea seama că erau singurii clienți rămași. Muzicienii au fost adormit într-un colț.
Era frig afară. Foarte frig. L-au dus pe Alfonso acasă. Peter și-a fost parcat mașina la puțin timp după ce l-a lăsat acasă și a luat-o pe Jill în brațele lui. Ai vrea să ne întoarcem la tine, a întrebat? Nu. Nu îl voia la ea acasă. Era mult prea devreme de la ultima despărțire. Așa că s-au descis să se întoarcă la birou unde au făcut dragoste sub masa de conferințe. Peter a condus-o pe Jill la o stație de autobuz. A făcut cu mâna, având o privire jucăușă. Ea avea să stea acolo singură în lumina difuză, fusta ei lungă în amurg, fața ei palidă trasă, povestea nopții fiindu-i scrisă din cap până-n picioare.

Era opt seara o săptămână mai târziu. Peter avea de lucru la biroul lui, secretara lui fiind la o ușă distanță. Alfonso a intrat pentru a goli scrumierele și să arunce gunoiul. Când a dat ochii cu Peter, i-a spus că urma să vină mai târziu. Peter l-a privit și a zâmbit șters și i-a spus că nu are decât. Telefonul lui sună.
Vrei să-ți transfer apelul? L-a întrebat secretara lui.
Cine e?
Jill. Jill e tot ceea ce a spus.
Jill? Cine e? N-am auzit niciodată de ea, a spus Peter înainte să închidă telefonul.
Alfonso i-a tras o privire. Ținea scrumiera grea de cristal în mână. Inima începea să îi bată cu repezeală și s-a uitat la bărbatul ăsta, după înapoi la mână. Handicapatul. Nenorocitul naibii. English: The Slave Narrative in American Literature from Olaudah Equiano and Frederick Douglass to Mark Twain General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature

Translation - English The main feature when it comes to the slave narrative of the 18th century would have been the fact that black authors would never intend to pretend to be something different than what they were. It would be most incorrect to state that this practice was one that was in opposition with the reality outside their status as the main intent was based on showcasing the “continuous rejection of oppression and defence on manhood” (Foster 44). As in, even though they would have adopted the current literary conventions of those times, they would never intend on creating a new form of literary genre. The authors are looking at a focus on the individual, as opposed to an intent of perfecting the written text.
The author of the 18th century would conserve a chronological line of events in which the main ideology would be sustained by religious motives, often concentrating the attention on the horrors of the slave trade. As briefly mentioned above, the fellow black writer did not
have a certain audience they could refer to, as most of the literate society would be of white descent. Many earlier publications would establish themselves on British land. Olaudah Equiano would be the first prominent figure when it came to the rise of the slave narrative. In his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, the author embarks us on a journey which would consist of a variety of styles, ranging from the slavery narrative, travel narrative, and lastly spiritual narrative.
When discussing the events through which the narrator would have been forced to go through, they often depict the outcome as happening due to a sense of courage and perseverance they were able to maintain. Very few writers were able to buy their freedom and achieve respectable positions. Frederick Douglass will remain the prime example in those regards, a former slave who would end up with a respectable position in the Congress. Through those means, he was able to push the abolitionist agenda to an audience on a larger spectrum. The slave trade had been challenged greatly during this specific century, as many feared that if this trade would have been abolished, many countries would have to suffer in an economical sense. This “humanitarian procedure” was necessary in the system constructed, or at least there was a need for it as no quick substitute to this could have been supplied in high time. Among one of Foster’s publications, it is quoted that when the African Slave Trade Act had been signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1807, an act which prohibited the exportation of humanitarian export had been prohibited, interest in slave narratives quickly dissipated.
Moving forward to the 19th century, there is the instance that people are greeted with a different feel to this literary genre, an aftermath that came with the socio-political developments. The focus now shifts for the need of freedom from bondage, it is essentially the evolution from the predeceasing tradition set back in the previous century. The American abolitionists have been greatly inspired by the ceasing of slavery in Britain in 1830 and sought to search for further clarification to as of how the current slavery situation had impacted their community. During this period, important novels which would belong to Olaudah Equiano and Venture Smith would be reissued and their sales would skyrocket as interest to this literary genre would only grow bigger by each passing day.
An important novel which was greatly inspired by this characteristic would be one of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Through the entirety of the fictional text, the reader follows the runaway slave Jim along the river of Mississippi. This action had been taken as the result of him finding out his master was looking into the possibility of selling him forward. Therefore, he chose to leave on a journey in hopes of getting to the North where he would be able to re-establish himself as a different individual.

Source text - Mandarin Chinese 在家里住了近十天，三闾大学没有消息， 方鸿渐却受到了赵新楣 的信，约他下午去赵家。信里说：”以前的事，都是误会， 今天有 重要的事情告诉你.” 那天上午，方鸿渐看到当天报上登了曹元朗和 苏文纨订婚的启事。 这也许就是赵新楣要告诉他的重要事情吧， 他想。
Translation - Romanian După ce a stat acasă pentru aproape zece zile, nu a mai primit vreo veste de la Universitatea Sanlu, dar în schimb a primit o scrisoare de la Zhao Xinmei în care era întrebat dacă poate să vină la Zhao acasă într-o după amiază. Conținutul scrisorii era următorul: "Ultimele evenimente au fost numai niște neînțelegeri. Astăzi am să-ți împărtășesc niste știri importante." În dimineața aceea, Fang Hongjian a observat că logodna lui Cao Yuenlong și Su Wenwan a fost făcută publică în ziarul publicat în aceeași zi. Poate astea sunt veștile pe care vrea să i le spună Zhao Xinmei, s-a gândit.
În după amiaza aceea, Fang Hongjian i-a făcut o vizită lui Zhao Xinmei. Zhao Xinmei a spus: "Hai să uităm de pățaniile săvârșite la băuta de aseară, propun să devenim prieteni buni." Venind vorba de logodna domnișoarei Su, Zhao Xinmei a mai adăugat: "Am fost de părere că o să se însoare cu tine, cine ar fi crezut că o să fie Cao! Toți i-am trasmis simpatie. Acum ne trasmitem același sentiment reciproc, asta pe lângă faptul că o să fim colegi pe viitor--" "Poftim? Și tu ai o să mergi la Universitatea Sanlu?"
Așa că Zhao Xinmei i-a spus următoarele: Universitatea Sanlu este o instituție nou înființată, iar președintele Gao Songnian este chiar profesorul lui. Inițial, Gao Songnian i-a propus să fie capul Departamentului de Politică, dar nu se putea fară domnișoară Su. Încet dar sigur l-a adus în discuție pe Fang Hongjian când vorbeau, pentru ca Fang Hongjian să o părăsească pe domnișoară Su. Gao a insistat să plece, dar când a primit vestea logodnei, nu a avut decât să fie de acord prin telefon.
Zhao Xinmei a mai spus că în Shanghai mai sunt ceva oameni. Puteau să meargă împreună.
Numai atunci a înțeles Fang Hongjian că Gao Songnian l-a rugat să fie profesor numai că l-a recomandat Zhao Xinmei. A spus: "Ar trebui să-ți aduc cele mai umile mulțumiri." După care i-a recunoscut că nu de domnișoară Su era el îndrăgostit, ba da domnișoara Tang, chiar dacă acum au rupt legătura. Când Zhao Xinmei a auzit acestea, și-a dat seama de ce greșeală colosală a dat dovadă, atitudinea lui fiind prea degajată. L-a reținut pe Fang Hongjian, după care l-a sunat pe Dong Xiechuan pentru a merge toți trei la cină.
În timpul mesei, când venise vorba de Universitatea Sanlu, Fang Hongjian a spus către Zhao Xinmei "Ar trebui să îl aducem și pe Xiechuan."

Dong Xiechuan a mai spus: "Nu e necesar să decurgi la chestii de genul doar pentru că o fată--"
Nu i-au priit lui Fang Hongjian cele auzite, motiv pentru care a mâncat pământul în drum spre ieșire din restaurant. Imediat cum a ajuns acasă și s-a așezat, Zhao Xinmei și Dong Xiechuan l-au sunat să își ceară iertare.
Toți trei au plecat împreună din Shanghai la Universitatea Sanlu. Pentru că Li Meiting, un prieten vechi de-al lui Gao Songnian, era șef de Departament al Literaturii Chinezești, credea că ar fi avut o atitudine arogantă. Unul era Gu Erqian, o veche cunoștință de-al lui Gao Songnian, un bărbat slab de vreo 50 de ani, care părea tare fericit că a fost angajat în poziția de profesor de istorie. A treia persoana era domnișoara Sun Roujia, fata unui coleg de-al lui Zhao Xinmei, care absolvise facultatea recent. Zhao Xinmei a adus-o în poziția de asistent în Departamentul de Limbi Străine, motiv pentru care ea i se adresa cu 'unchiule'. Mai mulți au căzut de acord să meargă împreună până în Ningbo pe barcă. Zhao Xinmei a spus că a cumpărat biletele, toate de cabine în clasa I. Li Meiting a menționat că are prieteni în echipa de trasporturi prin care ar putea să facă rost de bilete direct. Zhao Xinmei a spus: "Nu cred că e o idee bună. Ba chiar te rog să nu!" Fang Hongjian nu îl plăcea pe om, spunea că nu dă dovadă de inteligență.
Ziua de mers pe barca era 22 Septembrie. Fang Hongjian a mers cu lejeritate acasă la Zhou să își ia rămas bun, dar nu a văzut pe nimeni. O zi mai tărziu, familia Zhou i-a oferit mâncare de drum de patru sortimente, dar Fang Hongjian nu a vrut să le ia să le mănânce. Domnul Fang a spus că fiul lui 'nu mănâncă resturile Zhou'.
