Spanish term

las mil y una

Spanish to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Theatre
Talking about a recent play:

El autor ha inventado las mil y una y ha hecho bien en utilizarlas.

OK, "a thousand and one"... things? Is there a better way to express this?

Thanks.

Discussion

kironne Mar 16, 2009:

Or maybe it's the author real life they're talking about. Do you know anything about him/her? Maybe he/she's someone with a lot of experiences in life, and he's using them in his narrative. Sometimes, "hacer las mil y una" means "to have lived a lot"
kironne Mar 16, 2009:

Hi again, Cinnamon. If there's nothing between the title and this, then take a look at the title *smile*
Could be a typo.
Or sometimes, omitting the "what" is done on purpose. Is it a long text? I have a feeling you'll know by the end of the text.
Christine Walsh Mar 16, 2009:
For example, 'Le hizo las mil y una' could refer to misbehaviour by a naughty child or an errant spouse, that's how flexible it is -not your context, of course.
Christine Walsh Mar 16, 2009:
It is 'LAS mil y una', and you've already got some good options. As for 'WHAT', all sorts of things, the kind of things a writer invents to make his play entertaining. I can't think of a real translation, it depends very much on the context.
Cinnamon Nolan (asker) Mar 16, 2009:
1000&1 or 1000+1 WHAT? Or an idiom? Thanks for the help, but it seems it would be "inventado mil y una", without LAS, if we're just talking about a whole lot. So, is there some special idiom for "LAS mil y una"? Or, if we are just talking about heaps, gobs, gazillion, whatever, then: of WHAT?
Cinnamon Nolan (asker) Mar 16, 2009:
Text before and after Before: nothing but the title of the play. After: "Su comedia es una cargada yuxtaposición de diálogos ingeniosos y de festivas peripecias que no dejan el mínimo resquicio de aburrimiento."
kironne Mar 15, 2009:
Hi Cinnamon, do you have what's before and after this sentence?
In general, "las mil y una" means "gazillion" or "80.000" or whatever big number you want, to express "a whole lot, plus one".
