dějiny výtvarné kultury

Czech to English Art/Literary Education / Pedagogy
This is one of the subjects taken by a student in his school-leaving (maturita) exam:

z dějin výtvarné kultury

The course as a whole has an arts-and-crafts emphasis, so I'm not convinced this is just 'fine arts'.

The student's subject is 'uměleckořemeslné zpracování dřeva' and the specialisation is 'práce řezbářské'.

Discussion

Dylan Edwards (asker) Nov 21, 2016:
The definition of 'visual culture' seems rather broad in English (and it may have been defined in different ways at different times), shading off into anthropology on the one hand, and media studies on the other.

On the other hand, 'dějiny výtvarné kultury' seems to have 'high' culture at its core - at least, this is the impression I get when looking at the information on a 4-volume Czech publication entitled 'Dějiny výtvarné kultury'. There is a much higher proportion of fine art (painting, sculpture) than I had imagined.

I'm assuming it's "history of" and "art and visual culture", as opposed to "history of art" and "visual culture". Hard to tell. :-)
Note from asker:
Yes, I'm not sure. I notice the Uni of Exeter has a course in "Art History and Visual Culture".
