seam allowance
The amount of material that is left to the inside of a seam. Sometimes you cut the seam allowance at a width of 5/8th" or 1.5 cm and this may be trimmed after sewing to allow the seam to curve, other times the seam may be basted to allow it to be gathered slightly to fit into say the armhole of a garment. The seam on the sleeve side is gathered slightly by basting in order to fit into the armhole.

Discussion
The same author uses the term "naadtoeslag", which likewise appears to mean "seam allowance".
