Here is what "context" means: Context is the frame of reference for the term in question -- the frame that allows the translator not only to understand how the term is used but also to select just the right part of speech, gender, quantity, register, tone, and point of view that would make the translation meaningful. "There is no context" is a meaningless statement. There is always context; otherwise, there is no way to translate.

Sometimes the context is the sentence or paragraph where the word or phrase lives and breathes. At other times, context is the background information that makes the phrase a linguistic unit, rather than a meaningless string. For example, context could be:

- "This is a name of a software program. I wonder if I should translate it."

- "This is a word used by programmers in C language. Here is an example showing how it is used .... Should I translate this word, and how?"

- "This is the title of a section in a long article about programming. Here is the first paragraph of that section."
