Hi there,

I would really appreciate it if you could indicate to a rookie like me why it is "too late"? and late for whom?

I thought this was a forum for discussion, feedback and mutual help, or am I just assuming?

regards,

In its tumultuous 48-year history, affirmative action has been both praised and pilloried as an answer to racial inequality. The term "affirmative action" was first introduced by President Kennedy in 1961 as a method of redressing discrimination that had persisted in spite of civil rights laws and constitutional guarantees. It was developed and enforced for the first time by President Johnson. "This is the next and more profound stage of the battle for civil rights," Johnson asserted. Isn't too late to post "A" context? A real pro always needs a context and a dictionary.

Hi there,

I agree that context is essential in translation but not all terms need context. The case of affirmative action is deeply rooted in the lexicon of American politics and beyond.
Nonetheless, here is a context for the term:

And here is another suggestion, Ahmad I believe that, rather than squashing incomplete questions, the moderator should have the option to place any question posted with incomplete information in an invisible state until the asker completes the question with whatever is lacking. In its invisible state, only the moderator and the asker has access to the question, so that the asker can complete the question and the moderator can restore it when it has been completed.

If ProZ.com had chosen a more professional route, this option would have been instituted a long time ago.

Nice one, Liliane :) And Fuad, chill out, my friend. It is still early. Have you had your coffee yet?
Liliane Hatem Mar 18, 2010:
No context yet? This is called negative action
Fuad Yahya Mar 18, 2010:
Context, context, context Without context, you are wasting your time. If you are averse to posting context, you may wish to just discuss the term with a few colleagues and arrive at a consensus, as you did in your previous question.
Noha Kamal, PhD. Mar 18, 2010:
We'd need your context to be able to offer your an alternative.

A Temporary Measure to Level the Playing Field

Focusing in particular on education and jobs, affirmative action policies required that active measures be taken to ensure that blacks and other minorities enjoyed the same opportunities for promotions, salary increases, career advancement, school admissions, scholarships, and financial aid that had been the nearly exclusive province of whites. From the outset, affirmative action was envisioned as a temporary remedy that would end once there was a "level playing field" for all Americans.
