A molecule which absorbs a quantum stores the energy as some kind of higher energy state. In the case of infrared quanta, these are a variety of states of molecular vibration. But a light quantum has sufficient energy to push an electron out of its stable ground state (or orbital) into a higher energy orbital. The molecule is then said to be in an electron-excited state (EES).
