English term

another attenuated day of rehearse

Not for points English to French Art/Literary Poetry & Literature novel
Context: From an American English novel - a music student reflects on her course and enjoys going to a secluded spot near a lake which has become a refuge from 'another attenuated day of rehearse, of practice...' I do not quite understand the meaning of ATTENUATED in this context and therefore can't think of the right translation for this adjective. Any suggestions?

katsy Feb 18, 2014:
see here: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/attenuate; my eye is caught by definition 3: to lessen the amount, force, magnitude, or value of : - a day whose value is lessened...
katsy Feb 18, 2014:
I would tend to agree with claude-andrew's line of thought - a day that is restricted because of the activity, not as full as it could be... but a strange use, I think

Agree with Tony
claude-andrew Feb 18, 2014:
Maybe the writer means that the rehearsing and practising are intense and preclude any other activities; the student's life is thereby attenuated in a certain fashion; but the author has transferred the epithet from her life to the day's practice. In French I might offer "... journée d'entraînement qui laisse peu de temps pour vivre / réspirer ..."
ormiston Feb 18, 2014:
it could mean that the activities are 'watered down' and somewhat unnecessarily spread out over the whole day, i.e.
une journée inutilement prolongée...?
Tony M Feb 18, 2014:
@ Asker Far be it from me to presume to suggest the writer made a mistake, but like you, I find this use of 'attenuated' mildly puzzling; I would have understood immediately if it had been 'extentuating'.
So I suppose we just have to try and figure out what the writer really meant by it...

un autre jour de répétition sans saveur

I agree with my colleagues about this loss of something in a day entirely dedicated to something and with no time for anything else..a bit difficult to give some nice rendering..

fade ??? gris ???
Peer comment(s):
