The Renault glossary says:
a-coups de couple = torque jerks / torque jolts
a-coups moteur = engine jerks / engine surges (US) / engine jolts
a-coups moteur (en accélération) = engine sags (US)
a-coups moteur (en décélération) = engine buck (US)

Volvo says:
a-coups de couple = clunck and shuffle
