I know there are several entries for this term in the archives, and up till now I've been happily translating it as 'videoconference' without a care in the world.
However, I've just got to this phrase (it's in a set of tender specifications for the A-V facilities for a major conference venue)
« Les écrans servant à la visualisation de documents, de multimédia, de vidéoconférence ou de visioconférence seront de type LCD »
This sadly makes it clear that they are making a specific distinction between these two types of vidoeconferencing — and my understanding is that the 'visio-' version refers to the rather jerky kind of images one gets over conventional telephone line based systems, whereas the 'vidéo-' version refers to 'proper' live video.
But does anyone know if there are specific terms to differentiate these in EN? I can't think of anything offhand, and my research is being hampered by the amount of 'noise' out there on the 'Net :-(
While I carry on racking my brains and researching this, can anyone possibly come up with an answer off the top of their head for me?

As I made clear from the outset in my question, a clear technical distinction was being made between the two terms; however, my customer told me not to bother and to use the same term for both — so who am i to argue?!"

Although I agree with Alain and Richard, there's a clear distinction made here - otherwise you wouldn't have two terms to translate. I used to be involved in conferencing equipment for a company in Paris, where both the terms "audio-visual (or AV)" and "video" conferencing were used. My understanding is that the AV conferencing is (or rather used to be) a step up from a tele-conference, using the phone line and resulting in a poor quality image. Perhaps the site uses the term to address people who are a little 'stuck in their ways' in terms of technological jargon. No disrespect intended, but don't some French still talk in terms of old francs?
Try googling audio-visual and video conferencing - you'll find that quite a few conference equipment companies continue to make a distinction.

Tout d'abord, traitons la question qu'à peu près tout le monde se pose lors de recherches sur la visioconférence : Quelle est la différence entre la visioconférence et la vidéoconférence ?
On va dire que dans les faits, c'est la même chose.
Maintenant certains puristes déclarent qu'on doit parler de vidéoconférence lorsque le flux d'image et de son est transmis via la voie satellitaire et de visioconference dans les autres cas
C'est vrai qu'au début de l'aventure, dans les années 70, cela se passait ainsi.
Puis, la technologie aidant, on est passé par les câbles du téléphone, principalement par les lignes RNIS, puis par les tuyaux d'internet.
Et on s'est mis à appeler cette technique la visioconférence.
L'origine du mot viendrait de France Télécom qui avait crée un produit appelé visioconférence et le terme est resté.
On notera en tout cas que c'est un terme très franco-français et que le reste du monde parle de vidéoconférence ou vidéo-conférence (également videoconferencing chez nos amis anglo-saxons).
Quoiqu'il en soit, comme on l'a dit plus haut, les deux termes désignent aujourd'hui la même chose.

Discussion
Specifically mentioned in connection with the 'visioconférence', they talk about the use of a 'codec', and also that this has separate outputs for the incoming camera feed + an incoming document feed; I assume this means that a remote document is scanned and sent once, thus not using up bandwidth for a static image, whilst potentially allowing it to use higher resolution? So all this tends to confirm the idea that the visioconférence is specifically the type that takes place over 'ordinary' phone lines.
