French term

linéaires d\\\'ouverture

French to English Science Environment & Ecology remote sensing
Another term in a doc giving parameters for remote sensing images...le degré d'ouverture par secteur d'exposition (incluant les linéaires d'ouverture...). Google, I've found "linear apertures" , though whether that's the same, I'm not sure. Anyone knowledgeable about this topic who can advise me? TIA.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 linear apertures....
3 aperture azimuth

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 18, 2005:
aperture linears?? My apologies as I didn't give enough context. It turns out the paragraph is concerned with the features in the images, not the techniques used to take the images. On one site, I found that the aperture of a lagoon (its hydrodynamic communication with the ocean)can be calculated using the following linear quotient: (passes + hoas + immersed crown) / the perimeter of the atoll. So I suspect that neither of the answers offered here is right in this context. My fault, not yours. Both your suggestions much appreciated.

If you're talking Synthetic Aperture Radar.

Google it and see what you think. Look at http://www.sandia.gov/RADAR/whatis.html for example for a brief introduction where you will see that "azimuth" is the direction in which the plane (or satellite?) is travelling.

Note that as the reference explains, the \"aperture\" in SAR is the distance the plane flies (hence \"SYNTHETIC aperture\") and, presumably, the width its radar scans to the side, i.e. the aperture has two components, range and azimuth (or \"along track\")
