Le fond géologique est donc essentiellement constitué par un socle précambrien où prédomine le granite, et par des sédiments continentaux gréseux et argileux qui se sont déposés du Primaire au Tertiaire. Ce fond disparaît fréquemment sous les alluvions quaternaires des vallées fossiles.
Un volcanisme récent avec émission de basaltes s'est développé à la fin du Tertiaire et au Quaternaire dans l'Aïr.

The basic geology of an area can be overlaid with and concealed by alluvial material.
"These islands are largely founded on some of the oldest and most durable rocks found around the world. Because the basic geology of the islands is of a hard rock, the material available to create beaches might be thought to be sparse. However, along the western coasts the limited sand and gravel derived from glacial material has been greatly supplemented by calcareous sand, derived from biological sources (shells etc.). In suitable locations this sand has accumulated in large quantities, forming wide beaches backed by dunes and a flat, fertile coastal plain (machair). It is this type of beach type which is commonest along the western coast of the Western Isles."

"Since the international research team knew the basic geology of the discovery area, Jonathan's role as a geologist was to construct a complete geological framework for the entire area (~100 square kilometers), to establish the age of the fossil, and the age of sediments in the entire area in addition to the nature of how the whole package of sediments are exposed across the region."

: with the last sentence "ce fond disparait..." I don't think that "fond" is figurative but is actually physical, it is the actual foundation.
