French term

pré-traite

French to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry
This appears at the top of a series of information sheets about new animal nutrition products - just above the trade name in fact - My first thought was "pre-milking care" or "pre-milking products". However, since the products are also intended for pigs and poultry, I don't think this can be the case. I was wondering if "traite" here was being used in its sense of "trade", i.e. preparing livestock for being sent to market. However, I can't find any confirmation of this guess, so any enlightenment would be most gratefully received!

Discussion

AHLS (asker) Oct 17, 2008:
Response from client Yes, it does indeed refer to pre- and post-milking treatments. The client has just confirmed that it should not have been included on these sheets. If only they would check their material carefully first... Many thanks for your answers!
Bourth (X) Oct 17, 2008:
No luck finding anything on "pré-traite" or "post-traite" related to nutrition products, but there are hygiene products for pre- and post-milking treatment of udders, milking machines, etc.
AHLS (asker) Oct 17, 2008:
Development The same client has just unexpectedly sent two more information sheets for translation, this time for "post-traite" products, intended for cows and goats - so I am beginning to think it really does refer to milking and they have used "pré-traite" inappropriately. Thanks for all your help; I shall have to refer it back I think.
AHLS (asker) Oct 17, 2008:
Clarification (hopefully!) The products, which promote growth and reduce stress reactions, come in 5 - 10 litre drums and need to be added to drinking water or sprinkled onto fodder. I tried to check out the client's website, but it isn't working unfortunately.
Bourth (X) Oct 17, 2008:
This is really very vague. Not an established usage, I don't think. Can you share the trade name? That might help us figure out what is going on.

pre-milking

I would definitely go with the milking as it makes the most sense in the context of nutrional supplements for cows and goats
Note from asker:
Thanks Phillisa. I think this is looking likely, but I'll wait to confirm that the client is going to remove the term from their products for pigs and poultry!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks for that - although it wasn't what the client intended in the end, but that's their mistake!"

a bit of context next time, please!
Note from asker:
Sorry, kashew, there's no much more to add. The trade name is followed by a list of livestock it can be used for, ingredients and instructions for use. Thanks for your suggestion though.

I guess the accent on the e has been forgotten. The following ref. may be useful.

Note from asker:
Thanks for that, Gabriella. It doesn't appear to be the feed, though. It is the livestock rearer who has to add the product to the animals' feed or water. I think I shall have to ask for clarification from the client.
