neutral B D Finch : I agree with "adverse possession", but think "empiétement" should be translated as "encroachment", not trespass. Neighbours surreptitiously shifting the fences is the most likely risk.

Point taken. Encroachments, like overhanging trees and shifting fences, are technically trespasses on land, whereas spillage of manure or genetically modified sprays into a neigbouring field would be encroachments (the UK tort of 'Rylands vs. Fletcher')
