Portuguese term

quitaba

Portuguese to English Other Cooking / Culinary Angolan delicacies
I don't imagine for a moment that it has an English name but I wonder if anyone has any idea of the main ingredients of quitaba and of its general nature i.e. is it a cake, a fish, a juice or what?

"Foi também possível expor peças de artesanato e quitutes da terra, como **quitaba**, doces de coco e de ginguba, pé de muleque, múcua, peixe seco, queijadas e paracuca, que convidam à curiosidade e são muito apreciados uma vez experimentados… !

Andrea Munhoz May 13, 2008:
Well, you can try 'spicy peanut dough' otherwise :-)

If there's one thing I never liked even as a child it was peanut butter, and under my cholesterol reduction diet I'm not allowed it (hooray, though it means I have to forego satay sauce). Seriously, can't I persuade you and Andrea to post answers?
Marcos de Lima May 13, 2008:
oh that's a bit harsh. if there's one thing America's given us that's any good, it has to be peanut butter and jam (or jelly, as they call it) sandwiches... I have them regularly and I don't trust anyone who doesn't... ;-)
lexical (asker) May 13, 2008:
This all sounds quite encouraging! The inclusion of peanuts seemed inevitable - most of the other items in the paragraph (which I found) feature them too. Not that I'm against Angolan food - I'm quite partial to a good moamba de galinha, though I'll pass on the grey wallpaper paste they serve with it (funge).
Marcos de Lima May 13, 2008:
yes, I think it's one of those which has to keep its original name. I would probably just write 'quitaba (a kind of peanut butter seasoned with salt and chillies)'
Andrea Munhoz May 13, 2008:

ok then. :-)

all this talk of satay sauce and quitaba has just inspired a new recipe which I shall attempt tomorrow; no prizes for guessing what's going to be the main ingredient...

Can't introduce the URL. Just look for letters to Gabriella. It's both in Portugues and in English.
