Portuguese term

família de procriação

Portuguese to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
For me, and also for Aurélio, "procriar" is "to breed", so the "família de procriação" would be the birth family. However, from the context it seems more like a foster family, especially as the percentage of people living with parents is entered separately.
My view is that it could either be a typo for "família de criação" (foster family), or possibly an alternative form used only in Portugal - the original text is PT-PT.

The phrase reads:

Any suggestions?

foster family

Hi Paul, I have never heard the term "procreation family" in English. I think what they're getting at here is some family other than the parents, and foster family, IMHO, comes closest to that in English

procreation family (see below)

This is in support of Cristina but the Agree function doesn't give me enough space to explain. Here are 2 quotes from her references:

From these , it is quite clear that "família de procriação" is the family you form when you marry (if you do) and have children. I found relatively few references to "procreation family" but they are all serious anthropology papers. Here's one.

"Everyone has two types of family, the orientation family which is the family in which you are born to and the procreation family which is the family in which you create. "

I don't know if there is a better term that "procreation family" but I'd support Cristina's version in the absence of anything more authoritative. If you agree with this analysis, please award the points to her, not me.
