Este artigo pretende analisar a hipótese de manipulação da realidade narrada no filme Cidade de Deus (2002). A partir desta proposta discursiva, o ensaio pretende contextualizar a maneira pela qual a trama foi enfocada, questionando a suposta aproximação e adaptação ao gênero gangsteriano, despertando a sensação de uma “história fabricada” dentro de um contexto real: o universo favela, exótico à bilheteria internacional.

I can't understand exactly what they mean... "pela qual"..."enfocada"
I'd appreciate an explanation more than a translation.. :-)

Explanation:
As you may know, Cidade de Deus is based on a novel. I presume the authors mean to address the way in which the novel was rendered in film—the way the plot (which takes place in a very real context) was given a Tarantinoesque, neo-noir style, perhaps even as a deliberate way of making the film more appealing to international audiences.

I suppose they're referring to the "angle" or " vantage point" the movie was seen from . . Maybe looking from the inside out or the outside in . .
