It’s difficult to say. I have 4 big clients (two agencies and two direct clients) and a lot of smaller customers (one of these was a big one but over the years things have changed). The “problem” is that the big clients are not regular, some years they have no projects at all and then suddenly a huge job materializes right in front of you, while my smallish customers are very, very regular and they keep me working all year round…

I ticked 50%, but it may be more. It's a direct client, not an agency, and I've been working with them since the turn of the century, initially as an English language trainer in the company, but now working from home as their go-to translator.

Until I read you post it did not occur to me that even "large client" is an ambiguous term. Large in terms of amount of work or in terms of number of tasks/projects? I have both kinds: agencies that send a lot of work, but it's all little jobs, and agencies that send a large-ish job once a year. Fortunately I have the third kind as well: agencies that send sizeable jobs regularly. And of course one can measure the "size" of a client by the amount of money that one makes off of them. I have low-paying clients who send a lot of work and high-paying clients that send less.

No idea. It fluctuates anyway. I have one client who seems to send me a big job every other month or so. Then there are a handful of agencies I seem to bill every month, for varying amounts (ranging from minimum fee to over a thousand euros). In 2019 (?) I edited a book, and that kept me busy for a good part of the year. Unfortunately the author retired so he won't be writing any more books.

In Germany it can be risky to have just two or three (big) clients as the fiscal authorities will tend to see you as an employee of your biggest client and hence refuse your freelance status.
Thus, in recent years I've tried to reduce the amount of work I do for my biggest client and to diversify my client base more, not only to reduce financial risks, but also for tax reasons.
