Spanish term

esencia de Pompeya

Spanish to English Other Esoteric practices
Dear all,

I'm translating a collection of magic rituals/recipes from Spain, and this is one of the ingredients. It's a ritual to help you find a job. I cannot find it anywhere.

Thanx in advance!

Pompeii cologne

Rather than an essence as in almond, rose or vanilla essence, this is a cologne used in rituals. I think you would find it difficult to get dictionary or scholarly references to it. I am very familiar with the use of Esencia de Pompeya in the Caribbean, and by some Latin American ritualists in the USA. In the USA it has also been translated as "Pompeii cologne" or "Pompeii perfume" by some distributors and users. IO prefer cologne because it is more of a cologne than a perfume to me.
See e.g. the mention in the following treatise: http://www.scribd.com/doc/9610198/urantia

Although I think it is a cologne rather than a perfume you may have to decide which one is best, depending on your audience. I imagine that "perfume" conveys more of an aura of ritual and ceremony to some than does "cologne".

essence of Pompei

I think this may be similar to many recipe translations, where the original (and a short explanation in brackets) will do. If you do not know the ingredients then I think "Essence of Pompei" would be intelligible for your readers by the context...;-)

Essence of Pompeii

I really wouldn't worry about finding a translation for such a term. If you look at the webs containing the term, you'll see they have all copied one an other and the “recipes” and “rituals” are identical. I'm pretty sure they don't know what it is either, if it exists!
