Spanish term

a vueltas cada una por su lado

Spanish to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Hello. I'm having real trouble understanding this expression; can anyone help out? It's from a press release for an art exhibition.

"Desde el despertar de la infancia hasta más allá de la misma muerte convivimos con esta dicotomía que marca las diferentes etapas de la existencia y que, sea a vueltas cada una por su lado o entrecruzándose periódicamente, dejan la huella en el carácter y que hace que seamos capaces, o no, de superar el periplo constante en el que nos sumergimos."

Thanks for your help :)

whether living each in his own space, or crossing paths occasionally

Just a suggestion to get the mental cogs turning. I percieve something like this meaning. There are many popular phrases in both languages for these contrasting descriptions of lifestyle and personal space.
