Are medical interpreting certificates really helpful in getting a medical interpreting job?

Hello everyone

I am wondering if medical interpreting certificates, like DPSI(for the U.K.) or NBCMI/CCHI (for the U.S.) really helpful in helping people get a medical interpreting job in the UK or the US if I am not based in either country. In other words, If I got any of the above-mentioned medical interpreting certificates( DPSI/NBCMI/CCHI ), would it be possible for me to directly apply for a medical interpreting job in the UK or in the US? Or only people who are currently based... See more

I am wondering if medical interpreting certificates, like DPSI(for the U.K.) or NBCMI/CCHI (for the U.S.) really helpful in helping people get a medical interpreting job in the UK or the US if I am not based in either country. If you are a nurse or a health care professional you are just good to start a career in medical interpreting. They need good terminology knowledge and a good and reliable approach toward your client. It depends if you work for a direct client or an organization. You have so many videos on youtube or other specialised websites on how to improve your techniques, you can practice that way and just be resilient. It depends if you work for a direct client or an organization. You have so many videos on youtube or other specialised websites on how to improve your techniques, you can practice that way and just be resilient. Your best friend is called "experience" and you gather that by working. After working as an interpreter for nearly 15 years that is my advice, work and study. Your work is your test. Language providers will ask for qualification as well as experience. Certificates are of great help for you to stand out of the crowd but that's not a requisite. Just read and build up your glossaries. Find some good quality blogs, newsletters and do a lot of search. Be connected to this market. Check on fb specialised groups and build up a LinkedIn profile. It will take time and the more active you are the better you'll advance. Have a back-up source of income as well. You can try telephone/video interpreting, trascriptions, reviewing if you are not based in the UK or US. Good luck and have a positive approach it's hard work same as for any other career. ▲ Collapse

In my case, it did! Nov 28, 2022

I hold DPSI in Health and it really made me visible in my job search. Now I am working as a remote medical interpreter for NHS through an agency. I really like to have the skill and the flexibility that it holds. One day you can work for NHS and the other day you find yourself interpreting a mental health session happening somewhere miles away from you.
I am learning a new word/ medical term every day, every day is another challenge but never dull!
